 CORSICA- ISLAND OF ELBA    Practical details 

SITUATION

Situated at 100 nautical miles from the Cote d'Azur and between 50 and 120 nautical miles from the Italian coast, Corsica is a mountain set in the sea. The island is 100 n. miles long, 45 wide and possesses 600n, miles of coastline with numerous beaches and coves.

There are also numerous sites for diving which figure amongst the most beautiful of the Mediterranean coast.

The nearby island of Elba provides a good departure base. It is the largest island of the Tuscany archipelago, which includes the islands of Capraia, Gorgone, Giglio, Giannutri….

The coastlimailto:sailpassion@laposte.netne of Elba has no less than 5 picturesque ports as well as many calm anchorages. The highest point of the island attains a height of 1019 meters at the summit of the Capanne mountain.  

NAVIGATION CONDITIONS

Blue, cloudless skies with a usually calm sea is the zones of the island of Elba and East Corsica. 

On the western coast of Corsica, there is a possibility of strong winds. check weather forecast carefully, especially if intending to spend the night at anchor. The wind generally increases 15 to 20 knots on the Beaufort scale in the Cap Corse and Bonifacio zones.

There is an extensive choice of anchorages or marinas all along the coast (about 25n. miles between marinas)  

CLIMATE

A typically Mediterranean climate from May to October. There is often a stormy period during the 2nd fortnight of the month of August, but this does not greatly interfere with normal navigation.                                                                    

In summer the temperature varies between 25 et 30°C, and the sea is about 24°C.           

In the Tuscan archipelago the prevailing wind is WNW generally moderate. SE wind around the island of Capraia and the north coast of Giannutri. Frequent calm periods with a light WSW breeze at night. Check the weather forecast towards the end of the cruise, care must be taken not to return to base after expiry of your contract.

ON LAND  

Visit the interior of Corsica if you don't already know it ! The mountain, untouched villages, and small restaurants where you can taste the Figatella, blackbird paté with myrtilles, bruccio cheese and the celebrated local sausages. The roads twist and turn but the distances are short.               

On the Island of Elba, stop off  in Marcianna Marina to take the telepherique, the « Cabinovia », to the summit of Capanno Mount for a splendid view of Corsica ant its neighboring islands.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Ferry from Nice, Marseille, Toulon, Genova and Livorno. Il you wish to bring your car, it is advisable to make a reservation.
